  20. There are two important documents included with DeskGallery
  21. to help you use the product effectively:

  24. T H E  P R I N T E D  C A T A L O G

  26. This catalog (manual) contains thumbnails of all the images
  27. on the CD's. Use this catalog to find images using its table
  28. of contents, index, looking through the images in the book,
  29. or any combination thereof.   The file name is directly
  30. above the image. The path name (the folder or directory
  31. where the file is located) is described on the black bars.
  32. If the black bar says: LIFE1:COSTUMES:FRENCH:FRENCH1, 
  33. this means the file you are looking for is on the CD-ROM
  34. called "LIFE1".  Open the "COSTUMES" folder, open 
  35. the "FRENCH" folder, open the "FRENCH1" folder and your file
  36. will be there, with other files, in alphabetical order.

  41. This useful card has many solutions for problems you may
  42. encounter.  Among other things, this card
  43. explains how to; open images in many applications, allocate
  44. more memory, set virtual memory, fix printing errors,
  45. prevent moire patterns, and lots more.  Keep it around.

  49. A B B R E V I A T I O N S

  51. The folders/directories are abreviations of the original
  52. Dover book title. Every folder contains a text file
  53. containing the complete title and author of the book.
  54. File names have a three letter abbreviation for the book
  55. title, followed by the page number, an alphabetical letter
  56. describing its position on the page (a-z, !, &, #, $, %).
  57. "a" is the upper-left image, then left to right down the
  58. page. Finally, the file name has a ".tif", ".pict", ".EPS",
  59. or ".WMF" suffix describing the file type.

  65. TIF FILES: All images in Lifestyles & Occupations, Animals
  66. & Plants, and Advertising Art were scanned at 600 dpi and 
  67. saved in TIF format (CCITT compressed). This TIF format has
  68. been tested extensively with all popular applications for 
  69. Macintosh and Windows that load TIF images (see the HELPCARD
  70. if you experience problems opening these TIF images). Edit 
  71. TIF images in Adobe PhotoShop(r), Corel PhotoPaint(r), and
  72. other paint programs.

  74. EPS, PICT, and WMF FILES: Images in Universal Symbols
  75. come in three (3) formats; EPS (PC Illustrator 5 format),
  76. PICT, and WMF.  This EPS format is compatible with all
  77. major word processors and page layout programs for Mac
  78. and Windows.  If possible, use EPS first – it has slightly
  79. better quality than the other two formats. Edit EPS images
  80. in Adobe Illustrator(r), Freehand(r), CorelDraw!(r), and
  81. other draw programs.

  83. If your application is not EPS compatible, or if you
  84. don't have a PostScript printer, use PICT with your
  85. Macintosh, or WMF with your Windows applications. Edit
  86. PICT images in Canvas(r), ClarisDraw(r), and other
  87. Macintosh draw programs. Edit WMF in CorelDraw!, Arts and
  88. Letters(r), Micrografix Draw(r), and other Windows draw
  89. programs.
